Ali Hasanov discusses issue of releasing Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev with head of UNHCR Azerbaijan office

The sides noted during the meeting that relations between the Azerbaijani government and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have been established on good bases, emphasizing Azerbaijan’ election as a member of the UNHCR Executive Committee as an obvious example, the press service of the State Committee for Refugees and IDPs told APA.

Also during the meeting, it was noted that Azerbaijani state is implementing huge works to resolve the problems of refugees and IDPs in the country, which are always appreciated highly by the UNHCR high commissioner as well as other UN officials and evaluated as an example for other countries confronting the same problem.

The sides said UNHCR is always interested in cooperation with Azerbaijan due to all these reasons and it attaches special importance to benefiting from Azerbaijan’s experience in improving the living conditions of the refugees and internally displaced persons, their growth of employment, developing and applying normative and legal documents within the norms of the international law in order to strengthen their rights and social protection. During the meeting, the parties praised the work of the UNHCR’s Azerbaijan office, discussing issues of prospective cooperation. At the same time, they expressed concern over the “trial” of Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev taken hostage by Armenians in Kalbajar and their appeal to international organizations to release Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev still being unanswered.
