OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said he wouldn’t completely rule out the possibility of collaborating with the U.S. Department of Defense on advanced weapons systems, though he made clear such a scenario would be unlikely in the near term, APA reports citing Bloomberg News.
Speaking at the Vanderbilt Summit on Modern Conflict and Emerging Threats on Thursday, Altman acknowledged that unforeseen global developments could shape future decisions.
“I will never say never, because the world could get really weird,” he was quoted as saying. He added that involvement in weapons development would only be considered in highly constrained scenarios where few alternatives exist.
“I don’t think most of the world wants AI making weapons decisions,” Altman added during a discussion with Paul Nakasone, the former National Security Agency director and a current member of OpenAI’s board.
