One of the main reasons of HIV prevalence in the region is injecting drug use. The above-mentioned situation is also observed in Azerbaijan. HIV prevalence among the injecting drug users is higher 4,5 times than sex workers, MSM and PWID.
The report also notes that HIV prevalence in Azerbaijan among the population is sufficiently lower (0.1%) than the other countries.
The authors of the report note that coverage of HIV treatment in Eastern Europe and Central Asia remains low - estimated 25% of people eligible for HIV treatment are receiving it. Two countries in the region Georgia and Romania have achieved more than 60% treatment coverage.
There are 34 million people in the world living with HIV. Half of them do not know about their illness. In 2001, approximately 1,7 mln people died of AIDS-related illnesses.
