An increase of 60% has been occurred in the number of earthquakes, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) told APA. 5214 earthquake shock was recorded in Azerbaijan last year. 3380 of them are local, near earthquakes and 1834 distant earthquakes. 50% of them (ML 2.8-5.6) was felt. 37 earthquakes occurred in the northwest part of the Republic.
Monthly distribution of the earthquakes and seismic energy release show that the rate in May was higher. It is due to earthquakes in Sheki and Zagatala. The amount of seismic energy released in October is also high. It is due to strong earthquakes occurred in Balakan and Ismayilli regions.
The south-eastern slope of the Greater Caucasus characterized by high seismicity remains active. The earthquakes in Zagatala are the most powerful seismic events of the reporting year.
Shamakhi-Ismayilli seismogenic area remains active as it was in previous years. The migration of earthquake focuses is observed in the north-north-west, south-south-east directions. The central and southern parts (Langabiz chain) of Shamakhi-Ismayilli area are active as well as northern part (Mikhtokan chain). The growth is observed in the amount of released seismic energy compared to 2011. The most powerful-5,3 magnitude earthquake occurred on 17 km south-east from Ismayilli on October 7, 2012.
