Deputy Chairman of the Parliament's Committee on Law Policy and State Building, author of the draft law Rafael Jabrayilov told APA that in connection with it amendments will be made to the article #151 of the Code of Administrative Offences.

To him, according to the offered amendments, drunk driver will be deprived of driving license from 6 months up to 2 years: ‘According to the current legislation, the drivers, who are caught drunk more than twice within a year and caused injury of someone, can be deprived of the driving license, but in most cases it is not applied. Because according to the current article, the drivers who are caught drunk for the first time are fined AZN 300 and this fine is as a rule applied in all cases. But after the new amendments, this fine will be eliminated and sanction of direct deprivation of driving license will be applied in such cases. Thus, the drunk drivers will be immediately deprived of the license in all situations’.

Saying that this sanction is being applied in several countries of the world, the author of the draft law substantiated its necessity with the recent increase of road accidents due to the irresponsibility of drunk drivers in Azerbaijan: ‘Though recently we increased the amount of fines up to AZN 300, it wasn’t effective, because the person driving drunk can pay this money. The most optimal variant is to deprive such drivers of the driving license’.

Jabrayilov added that the draft law would be put up for discussion in one of the committee’s meetings in the coming days.
