Chairman of Parliamentary committee: â€œI hope that the issue of draft deferment for masterâ€™s degree candidates will be solved positivelyâ€

Baku. Kamala Guliyeva – APA. “The Azerbaijani parliament will raise the issue on draft deferment for master’s degree candidates,” chairman of the parliament’s science and education committee Shamsaddin Hajiyev said, APA reports.

According to him, it is important to grant master’s degree candidates draft deferment: “Young people should be engaged in science. The experience shows that military service alienates many young talented people from science. We will raise this issue. But the final word rests with the President.”

Hajiyev said that it has already been decided to grant draft deferment to the doctoral candidates: “If master’s degree candidates are not granted draft deferment, then it is illogical to grant it to doctoral candidates. Currently, it is expected to grant doctoral candidates draft deferment. They must defend dissertation and get a degree within three years. However the experience shows that even 10 percent of doctoral candidates fail to defend a dissertation within 3 years. Only 500 persons are admitted to the doctoral degree program every year. More than half of them are girls. So, I think that the Azerbaijani Parliament will solve this issue.”
