According to her, of 3,593 Azerbaijani citizens 2,174 have been infected with HIV through injecting drugs, 1,016 through heterosexual contact, 55 through mother-to-child transmission, 35 through homosexual contact and 1 through blood transfusion. The way of infection of 312 people is unknown. Since November, 2006, 1,253 people infected with HIV have been involved in antiretroviral therapy supported by the Ministry of Health and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Treatment of 312 of them started during 11 months of 2012.
Almammadova noted that at present, the epidemic was at the concentrated level: “80% of persons infected with HIV is men in Azerbaijan. But, recently, the number of women is also increasing. HIV infection through heterosexual contact is also increasing. It makes 28% of the general infections. 44% of persons infected with HIV is 30-39 years old, 23% - 40-49, 18% - 25-29 and 2% - 0-14. Only 12 persons among 15-18 years old were infected with HIV. 960 of registered persons (27%) are in Baku and Absheron, 72% - in regions. Most infection cases were recorded in Shirvan, Hajigabul, Astara, Lankaran, Sumgayit, Khizi and etc. regions. The lowest level of HIV infection is in Ganja”.
