Department chief of Shamakhy observatory: The reports that the Earth will grow dark are groundless

Baku. Kamala Guliyeva - APA. â€œMaya calendar contain reports that the Earth will grow dark for several days in December, 2012. As an astronomer we do not have grounds to attribute it to a scientific phenomenon,â€ chief of Sun and Sun-Earth relations Department of Shamakhy Astrophysical Observatory named after N. Tusi Namig Jalilov told APA.
He said the Earth may grow dark if it collides with a large object.
â€œAt present no object is moving towards the Earth,â€ he said.
Jalilov said the processes happening on the Sun can directly affect the Earth.
â€œThe solar activity is reaching its 11 year maximum, but even a strong blast, can not make the Earth dark. Everything is normal. There are a lot of blasts on the Sun, but a disastrous blast is not expected. From next year solar activity will begin to reduce. As an astronomer I find it difficult to comment on these talks. They are groundless. These fears are groundless. These talks have nothing to do with science,â€ he said.
