A group of Azerbaijan-based youth organizations address UN Secretary General on arrest of young poets in Iran
“Dear, Secretary Generalâ€
Citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan, young poets Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizadeh visited Iran on April 29, 2012 to participate in the poetry festival. But, they were kidnapped by unknown persons in civvies in Tabriz on May 2 after participating in the event. Despite more than 2 months have passed, the notes sent by the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs to Iran, attempts of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran and Consulate in Tabriz, appeals of the Azerbaijani society and requests of the parents of the arrested poets, Iran’s state agencies have not given any information on motives of detention of Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizadeh to the corresponding state structures of Azerbaijan. The attempts of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran and Consulate in Tabriz to meet with Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizdeh have failed contrary to the international convention.
Then some Iranian media outlets issued statements that arrested Azerbaijani poets Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizadeh were accused of drug smuggling and spying for Israel, as if they accepted these accusations and showed that documents on it have been submitted to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs. But the Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that such reports are baseless and announced that no information was received by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran and Consular in Tabriz from the Iran’s official organizations.
We – a group of NGO representatives are concerned about the life of the Azerbaijani citizens Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizadeh arrested in Iran on baseless accusations. Their illegal detainment is a gross violation of human rights. We believe that the UN that is known as an authoritative organization of the world will address Iran and take principal and decisive steps towards the release of Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizadeh.
