Japanese company conducts next humanitarian company for IDPS,s refugees and the other vulnerable people
Japanese Limited Liability Company Fuji Optical is one of the major private donors of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
The cooperation goes back to 1983, when the Company started providing eye-screening and eye-glasses distribution among Indo-Chinese refugees in Thailand.
Since 2005 similar humanitarian projects have been carried out among IDPs, refugees in Azerbaijan. The mission team is headed by world famous Optometrist Doctor Akio Kanai, who received Nansen Refugee Award in 2006. This year, free of charge eye screening and eye glasses distribution for internally displaced persons, refugees and other vulnerable people will take place in Terter, Goranboy and Baku on 3-9 July 2012. The assistance programme will be carried out in close cooperation with the UNHCR Representation in Azerbaijan and local authorities.
More than $ 1 million has been spent by Fuji Optical to accomplish its humanitarian activity in Azerbaijan. Around 30 thousand pairs of high quality optic eyeglasses and other items have been brought to the country as in-kind donation to the UNHCR operations. In total, more than 12 thousand refugees, IDPs and other vulnerable people have benefited from the free of charge vision screening services. This year, Fuji Optical has brought 4,500 pairs of eye-glasses and other vision and hearing aid items and targets to screen about 2,000 IDPs, refugees and other vulnerable people in the selected areas.
UNHCR is a specialized UN agency which is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international interventions to protect refugees and find durable solutions for their problems worldwide. It has been operating in Azerbaijan since December 1992 to assist hundred thousands of IDPs displaced due to conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh and several thousand refugees and asylum seekers from other countries.
