Azerbaijan’s Health Ministry reports on anti-flu measures

According to the report of the World Health Organization on July 27, 2009, more than 160 000 A/H1N1 infection cases were identified in the world and 998 people died, press service of the ministry told APA. Azerbaijan took measures against the A/H1N1 virus within the National Plan on Pandemic Alert Preparation approved by the State Commission on coordination of anti-“bird flu” activities.

The Health Ministry issued a relevant order in April, 2009 to provide sanitary-epidemiological health of population, to strengthen preventive and anti-epidemic measures against flu and respiratory infections, as well as for prevention of virus spread into the country. A special laboratory supplied with modern equipments to prevent flu infection was established in the Anti-Plague Station and the laboratory experts passed international training courses. The Health Ministry’s Lung Diseases Institute was provided with negative-pressure boxes for treatment of patients. It was also provided with the reserves of WTO-recommended anti-influenza drug oseltamivir, other drugs, as well as disinfection substances, individual protective means and etc.

State customs bodies are taking measures concerning the application of single window principle in Azerbaijani state border checkpoints. Customs bodies operating in the border checkpoints inform the Republic Sanitary-Quarantine Inspection about the people coming from the countries where there are flu epidemics and these people are controlled by medical facilities.

Leaflets about the disease prepared by the Red Crescent Society and Health Ministry’s Republic Hygiene and Epidemiology Center were distributed to raise people’s awareness.

Republic Anti Plague Station established hotline 530 32 13 to raise people’s awareness. Travelers and transit passengers may phone 494 05 23 operating in the Republic Sanitary-Quarantine Inspection, if they feel the symptoms of the flu.

Republic Anti Plague Station has performed over 500 analyses in the lab in connection with A/H1N1 up to now. The results were negative.
