Chairman of the commission, Deputy Prime Minister Ali Hasanov said that the occupation of a part of Azerbaijani territories pave the way for the international drug mafia in the region. On the other hand, the drugs grown in Afghanistan are transported to Europe and north through the Silk Road. Touching on the work done in combating drugs Hasanov said Azerbaijan joined a number of international conventions and is cooperating with the neighboring countries.

“Azerbaijani law-enforcement bodies removed 1200kg drugs from the turnover, launched 1760 criminal cases within the recent six months. 860 people were treated in narcological dispensary,” he said.

Ali Hasanov said there are 23254 drug addicts in Azerbaijan, their number increased by 12 percent. But these are not real numbers. 1504 of the drug addicts have been registered in the dispensary, the rest registered for prophylactics.

Ali Hasanov said the main threat is in the southern border of Azerbaijan and touched on the importance of strengthening the activity of law-enforcement bodies there. Hasanov noted that half of the drug addicts are in Baku.

Deputy Health Minister Elsever Agayev noted that 1093 out of 1815 AIDS-infected persons in Azerbaijan are drug addicts. 145 out of 220 people have been infected through injection.

Representatives of Interior Ministry, Education Ministry and Lankaran Region Executive Power made reports on the work done. Instructions were given to take relevant measures.
