Baku-APAThe World Media Summit (WMS) will establish WMS Global Prizes for Journalism, according to a decision reached at the presidium meeting of the WMS in Hangzhou on Thursday, APA reports quoting Xinhua

The decision was made after discussions between leaders of major global media organizations including Xinhua News Agency, News Corporation, The Associated Press (AP), Reuters, ITAR-TASS News Agency, Kyodo News, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Turner Broadcasting System Inc., Google, Al Jazeera Media Network, The New York Times Company, NBC News, MIH Group, and Kasturi and Sons Limited.

The secretariat of the summit proposed establishing the prizes in order to recognize and encourage the worldwide media community to contribute to journalism, observe social responsibility, and set professional examples.

"We think it is very important to recognize the good work of journalists around the world, and we support it," said David Verdi, senior vice president of NBC News.

After an initial agreement to establish the prizes, details, including criteria, selection and nomination procedures, will be fully discussed before a final plan for the award is submitted to WMS co-chairpersons, said Li Congjun, President of Xinhua and Executive President of the WMS.

The prizes will cover all types of media and journalists from all over the world, especially those from developing countries, and encourage them to pursue excellence in the era of new media, he said.
