During the conference, President of APA Holding Vusala Mahirqizi delivered a lecture titled “Education matters in social media”, APA reports.

Vusala Mahirqizi said today social media is a place of mass communication for people. She also said social media is important to discuss the education matters, adding that education encompasses millions of people: “However, we cannot call everything happening on the internet media. The Internet is developing, because it is sufficiently profitable, optimal and borderless means of communication. Social networks have emerged as a result of the development of the internet. In any case, social networks are a way of monitoring to learn public opinion, demands of people. If we analyze a social network, social, public, cultural and other issues or problems can be found there. To be on social networks is important for not only media, but also state authorities. By placing any information on a social network, they can be assured that this information will be quickly and correctly. And that is just what universities and ministries need”.

Vusala Mahirqizi remarked that the Facebook page of the Ministry of Education needs to have a special operating mode. The holding president said the majority of subscribers to the page are people aged 15-35, most of whom are students: “The Ministry of education can manage a big student movement through a social network. Facebook is one of the best places for public opinion research. Even a small event can cause a big reaction. I suggest the Ministry of Education carries out some projects through social networks. Through various PR events, we can involve the youth in education-related activities. Facebook is an ideal arena to work with students and the ministry should not give up this arena”.

Mahirgizi noted that the Ministry of Education plays an important role in forming children’s community. She said there is a shortage of children’s ideas in Azerbaijan: “Both the Education Ministry and the State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs are responsible for this issue. You can create social networks, internet pages to implement certain projects related to children. The volunteers of the Ministry of Education and the State Committee can create a page on Facebook. I think it may be a good step to educate children. This is a very important issue. We don’t have a national symbol. There are no national children’s characters in our media. Children are currently watching foreign characters – Pepe, Masha and etc. It is important to carry out these activities for the formation and improvement of children’s thinking. The days when information was hidden have already gone. It is necessary to first obtain information, and then do conduct its PR and anti-PR”.

Vusala Mahirgizi went on to add that the Education Ministry can complain sometimes and it is possible. According to her, if there is any dissatisfaction, so the work is underway: “The official structures don’t press coverage of some information. However, the press always tries to make it public”.

Following this, the participants exchanged views on this topic. Director of Multimedia Information Technologies Center Osman Gunduz will deliver a lecture entitled “PR technologies in social media” and education expert Asif Jahangirov – “The problem of non-professionalism in media”. The conference is scheduled to be completed with discussions on media and education dialogue.
