“There are positive advances in attitudes toward persons with disabilities and in the way they are presented," said the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan, Vladanka Andreeva, at a seminar themed “Promoting the Use of Inclusive Language in the Media,” APA reports.
Noting that together with local partners of the organization she represents is working to create opportunities for every person with disabilities to fully realize their potential, Vladanka Andreeva said that their efforts are already yielding positive results: “Even our own offices were not fully accessible for people with disabilities at first, but we changed that. Now our team includes colleagues with disabilities.”
The UN representative stated that the purpose of the seminar organized for the media is to encourage journalists to ensure that stories about persons with disabilities reflect dignity, equality, and individuality.
“Media representatives are participating in today’s seminar, and we will conduct model analyses explaining what inclusive language means. I hope that from now on we will see a different and more positive approach in the way persons with disabilities are presented in the media. This will directly affect how society perceives them and how it supports them,” she emphasized.
