Vienna. Vugar Mustafayev – APA. The next annual meeting of the European Newspaper Congress has kicked off in Vienna today.

APA reports that mass media representatives of the most Western, Central European and former Soviet countries are attending the meeting organized with the support of Vienna City Hall and Japan Tobacco International Company.

It was noted in the event that working conditions of mass media have changed enough in the modern world. The coverage of the journalists’ work also expanded as a result of the application of modern technologies. Today, the main purpose of the media is to deliver timely and objective information to consumers. Mass media is the main instrument of democracy that provides the public discussion of the current problems.

Teacher of Columbia University, former journalist of The Guardian Emily Bell said that modern technologies have significantly changed the work of the press. While the office of any newspaper or information agency was like a large factory, now they have become smaller and cuts have been made. Thus, the circulation of 25 leading newspapers in the US has fallen by 40% since 2005. Moreover, advertising revenues have significantly reduced, which forced newspapers to cut costs. Emily Bell said that various information sources were established in the world that inform readers more rapidly and in a cheaper way:

“Our duty is to ensure the integration of media and modern news sources. The dynamics in the news has recently reduced. Video materials are used more in the news. Similar tendency is observed in the advertising industry,” she said.

The two-day meeting will be held in two major sessions. One of them is the forum of European publishers, the second is the forum of European editors.

The first day of the congress will focus on the ways of formation and presentation of news in the modern world, the role of digital hardware in spreading information, urgent problems of mass media, working principle and prospects of Sunday papers, the role of social networks. Speeches will be made and views will be exchanged on these topics.

Azerbaijan is represented by APA Information Agency and AzerTAj state agency. The visit is organized by Baku office of Japan Tobacco International Company.
