Azerbaijani Press Council publicizes results of April monitoring

Baku. Mahbuba Gasimbayli-APA. Azerbaijani Press Council has publicized the results of the monitoring conducted in April to determine the common tendencies in media. The Council told APA that the monitoring had been conducted on three classifications – theme of the materials, information sources and violation of “Professional Behavior Rules of Azerbaijani Journalists”. The monitoring found out that the number of the materials published in the media increased compared with the previous month. The number of the materials related to mass media and socio-economic sphere increased more. 49,508 materials were published in the newspapers monitored last month. It is 16,525 materials more compared with March. The monitored newspaper published media-related materials more in the first half of the month and socio-economic materials in the second half of the month.
The incident connected with “Azadlig” newspaper correspondent Agil Khalilov had an impact on the number, content and genre of political materials.
“This incident had a role in covering authorities-opposition relations more sharply. The current tendency also caused violation of professional principles.”
Media outlets continued to use materials of one another last month. The number of such materials was 99562. Newspapers widely use materials of information agencies.
In 135 cases sources were not shown or secrete source was quoted, this was a record figure. According to the monitoring, “Ekspress” and “Sherg” newspapers published news articles most. The monitored newspapers violated the terms of “Professional Behavior Rules of Azerbaijani Journalists” 329 times. Newspapers most ignored the first principle “Serving the truth, exactness and objectivity” of “Professional Behavior Rules of Azerbaijani Journalists”. 159 related facts were recorded in April.
