Chairman of the Press Council Aflatun Amashov said the book was translated into Azerbaijani thanks to the efforts of the Press Council.

Speaking about the importance of the book, the author, professor of the University of Minnesota Jane Kirtley said she started her career as a journalist, then received J.D. degree and worked as an attorney. Jane Kirtley underlined the importance of legal assistance to the journalists and said the world experience was used in the book.
“There is tension between media and government agencies in most countries. Law is a part of the professional journalism. A part of the development of media is the abidance by ethics. I support internal regulation,” she said.
Noting that some are concerned about the development of new, nontraditional media, Jane Kirtley said it will be difficult to take this into consideration in the preparation of media legislation.

Editor-in-chief of Azerbayjan newspaper Bakhtiyar Sadigov spoke about the conditions created for media in Azerbaijan. He noted the importance of creating the legislative basis of the new media.

Director General of APA Information Agency Vusala Mahirgizi said media enters a new stage in the world. According to her, the world is also still learning the new media that the Azerbaijani media is citing to.
“This is the theme of serious discussions. One of the interesting points is whether social networks can be regarded as media, bloggers as journalists. The opinion of other countries is also interesting. These issues should be studied basing on mutual experience,” she said.

Vusala Mahirgizi noted that steps are being made in Azerbaijan to create a new legislative basis on media.

Members of the Press Council, journalists and representatives of public organizations expressed their views on the theme. Jane Kirtley also answered the questions.

The diploma of the Press Council was presented to Jane Kirtley.
