In addition to drinking water, our main goals are the sewerage system. Here, the issue is the same as in water systems: we move from the source to the networks. Here, however, in a completely opposite way, the outlets are first created—that is, taking into account where the water will flow and how it will be treated —and only after that is the construction of the networks planned, Zaur Mikayilov, Chairman of the State Agency for Water Resources said at a meeting dedicated to the 2026–2035 State Program for the improvement of water supply, wastewater, and stormwater systems in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula, APA reports.

He noted that, in this regard, the construction of 12 new collectors in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula is planned, seven of which have already begun.

"The blue lines you see here are our collectors. The main collectors, whose construction we have already started in the first phase and plan to complete by the end of 2027, are shown with red lines. After that—in the second phase—the construction of main trunk lines is planned to provide sewerage systems for these areas in the eastern part of Absheron. In total, the construction of trunk collectors with a length of 346 kilometers is planned. At the same time, as you know, all of the city’s sewage and wastewater currently goes to the Hovsan wastewater treatment plant. To reduce this load on the city, the creation of 9 additional treatment plants is planned. One of them is the Alat wastewater treatment plant, which is intended to support the development of the Alat economic zone. The construction of the Sahil treatment plant, as well as the Lokbatan and Mushfigabad plants, is currently ongoing. The project to both upgrade and expand the capacity of the Sumgait city wastewater treatment plant is continuing. Within the city, the construction of the Boyukshor treatment plant is planned, which is intended both to regulate the ecological condition of Lake Boyukshor and to ensure that all flows and wastewater there are treated before being released, so that clean water is discharged into the lake and its level is maintained. A new Pirallahi treatment plant is also planned. The modernization of the Pirshagi and Shuvalan treatment plants, their commissioning, and the implementation of biological treatment are planned. Once these are carried out, the networks in these areas will also be connected and directed to the treatment plants through the main trunk lines, and thus, ecologically clean water will be released into the Caspian Sea in the Baku–Absheron Peninsula. In many places, the reuse of this water is also planned. As you know, at both the Hovsan treatment plant and others, including the Sumgait treatment plant, this water is planned to be reused as technical or irrigation water. Thus, it is planned to cover 95 percent of the sewerage systems,” Zaur Mikayilov emphasized.
