Ali Abbasov, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Communications and Information Technologies, described the project as an initiative to fill the global digital divide among regions.
According to him, the project will help overcome imbalances to access high-quality and low-priced Internet and electronic technology resources.
He added that this will spur the digital economy, an economy that is based on electronic goods and services produced by an electronic business and traded through electronic commerce.
The Transnational Eurasian High-Speed Information Superhighway Project was worked out by Booz & Co global consulting firm.
Vice-President of the consulting firm said a change in the ICT sector needs enormous investments.
“In order to set up such a network, there is a need for a detailed design and economic feasibility. Also, other countries of the region should join this initiative,” he added.
The ministerial meeting focused on the possible construction of a high-speed information highway lying from Bulgaria to Pakistan and its connection to the international backbone.
The conference will conclude with a Baku Declaration signed by 17 countries.
The countries agreed to set up a workgroup for preparing proposals on the project.
Iteca Caspian (Azerbaijan) and ITE Group Plc (UK) opened the 14th BakuTel-2008 Exhibition in Baku for November 11-14.
Rana Abdullayeva, manager of the exhibition, said that 105 companies from 21 countries, including the USA, France, Germany, Turkey, Israel, Russia, China and others are attending the exhibition.
