Belgian city imposes €350 fine for excessive water use amid drought

Authorities in the Belgian city of Chimay have imposed restrictions on water use due to "extremely low" groundwater levels amid prolonged drought conditions, RTL reported.

Under the restrictions, residents are prohibited from watering lawns and filling water tanks and swimming pools.

Local authorities said the measures were introduced because of drought conditions that have persisted since the beginning of the summer, compounded by several weeks without rainfall.

The restrictions will remain in force until August 31.

Residents who violate the water-use rules could face fines of up to €350.

The measures are aimed at conserving water resources as declining groundwater levels increase pressure on local supplies.
