Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has ordered the preparation of legislation aimed at restricting the uncontrolled spread of weapons across the country, according to the prime minister's office.
During a meeting with members of parliament's security committee, al-Zaidi said the proliferation of uncontrolled weapons currently represents one of the most serious threats facing Iraq.
He said legislation should be drafted to ensure that weapons remain exclusively in the hands of authorized state institutions.
The prime minister also stressed that Baghdad must strengthen the country's military and security institutions in the near future to ensure domestic security and stability.
