"Azerbaijan Railways" CJSC (ADY), part of AZCON Holding, is pressing ahead with the project for rebuilding the railway network in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave of Azerbaijan surrounded by Türkiye, Iran, and Armenia, ADY told APA-Economics.
The first phase of design and construction work, which began at the end of 2025, covers the Salammelik, Ordubad, Aza, and Julfa sections. Construction work is currently underway on the first 7-kilometer section from the Azerbaijan–Armenia border onward to Ordubad.
The length of the line along its axis measures 194 kilometers in length, and together with side tracks, 264 kilometers. A total of 814 engineering structures are planned to be built and reconstructed along the railway, including 10 stations, 3 platforms, 29 bridges, 11 overpasses, and various crossings. The 12 protective galleries located along the route are undergoing major reconstruction. At the same time, the ground has been broken for overpasses, concrete channels, and other engineering structures.
Currently, earthworks have been completed on a 6-kilometer section, and new rail-sleeper frames have been installed on a 700-meter section starting from Salammelik station.
Once the rehabilitation work is completed, the railway's annual freight-carrying capacity will reach 15 million tons.
The reconstructed railway network in Nakhchivan will connect on the Ordubad side, while the Horadiz–Aghband railway line will connect the main part of Azerbaijan to the Zangezur corridor. This will enable a direct railway link between mainland Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. At the same time, this route will create a direct railway connection with Türkiye.
Within the framework of the agreement reached in Washington on August 8, 2025, the establishment of the "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity" (TRIPP) envisions the restoration of the railway connection along the Zangezur corridor. Work is currently underway in other directions of the corridor: 60 percent of the work has been completed on the Alat-Osmanli section, and 73 percent on the Horadiz-Aghband section.
The new connection, by expanding the capabilities of the Middle Corridor, will significantly increase Azerbaijan's transit potential by contributing to the development of freight transportation between Europe and Asia and strengthening access to Turkish and European markets. At the same time, the Zangezur corridor will also carry strategic importance in terms of its connection with the North–South transport route.
