Romania may be forced to shut down its last operating nuclear reactor on August 13 as water levels in the Danube River continue to decline, Reuters reported.
Record-low water levels in the river prompted the shutdown of one of the two reactors at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant in late July.
The plant's two reactors normally account for around one-fifth of Romania's electricity generation.
Authorities have taken emergency measures to keep the remaining reactor operational, including deepening the Danube riverbed and redirecting water flow toward the nuclear power plant.
However, the continued decline in water levels could make it impossible to maintain the reactor's operation, potentially forcing its shutdown on August 13.
