Baku – APA-Economics. Sony announced this week that it has stopped making its famous cassette playing Walkman in Japan and that supplies will last as long as they’re available in the shops, Unthinkable reported.

While the company will still make Walkmans in other territories, such as China and Europe, the demand for the device has plummeted in its homeland.

In this age of MP3 players and downloadable music its easy forget about the device that started the portable music revolution, Sony’s Walkman. The Walkman was originally created 30 years ago as a response to the boss of Sony who asked if its engineers could create a device to keep him entertained on the plane. Chances are most people have owned a Walkman, whether made by Sony or not, at some point in their lives.

Since it went on sale in July 1979 Sony has sold 220million Walkmans allowing people to enjoy music on the go that wasn’t from a transistor radio and create their own playlists (admittedly not such an easy process as it is now).

The Walkman brand will be kept alive through Sony’s range of MP3 players but if you still enjoy the whir of a tape player, and the inevitable crunching sound when it chews your favourite cassette, you may want to think about getting one of these before they disappear altogether.
