Leyla Yunus again refuses medical examination

Representatives of the Joint Working Group on Human Rights and the Public Committee under Azerbaijan's Ministry of Justice have visited imprisoned director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy Leyla Yunus, Chairperson of Azerbaijan National Group of International Society for Human Rights, human rights defender Saadat Bananyarli told APA.

“Representatives of the Joint Working Group on Human Rights and the Public Committee under Azerbaijan's Ministry of Justice took the initiative to arrange a medical staff for Leyla Yunus and examine her. In this regard, a group of doctors, representative of the Public Committee Ahmad Abbasbeyli and I went to Baku Detention Facility. The medical staff includes ophthalmologists, gynecologists, therapists, and others. They brought all necessary medical equipment. However, Leyla Yunus didn’t allow the medical examination. The medical staff of the prison was there too. They also mentioned that Leyla Yunus has refused the medical examination since November 21”, Bananyarli said.

Leyla Yunus faced charges on the Criminal Code’s articles #274 (state betray), 178 (swindle), 213 (Evasion from payment of taxes), 192 (Illegal business), and Arif Yunus on articles #274 (state betray) and 178 (swindle). On July 30, she was sentenced to pre-trial detention.

Leyla Yunus is being kept in the Baku Detention Facility under the Justice Ministry’s Penitentiary Service.
