Baku. Shamil Alibeyli – APA. “The Azerbaijani citizens arrested in Iran traveled to the country as tourists and were detained because they had some illegal behaviors against Iran’s laws. Nobody is arrested in Iran without any reason,” Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohsen Pak Ayeeen told APA while commenting on the arrest of scientific worker of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), researcher and writer Khalida Khalid and her driver Shamkhal Huseynov in Tabriz.
According to him, they are going to magnify this issue: “She is a staff of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and of course she is not arrested because of it. She was a tourist and had some illegal behaviors against our laws. We have very good relations with Academy, its members attended some seminars in Iran. Now there are more 130 citizens of Iran detained in Azerbaijan. They are mostly detained because of drug trafficking. Among them many representatives of different jobs and surely they are not arrested because of it. They had some illegal acts against Azerbaijan.
Arrest of Azerbaijani citizens will not affect the good relations between the two countries. Both countries have good relations and they are going on. If somebody had any illegal job in Iran of course our security system will answer this matter. The relations between the two countries are developing.”
The Iranian ambassador said that he has no additional official information on Khalida Khalid or Shamkhal Huseynov.
