Baku to host funeral of National Hero Shahin Taghiyev following return of his body-UPDATED

The body of Azerbaijan’s National Hero Şahin Tağıyev, who passed away in the city of Malmö in the Kingdom of Sweden, will be brought back to Azerbaijan today at 21:05 with the support and organization of the State Committee on Work with Diaspora.

In response to an inquiry from APA, the State Committee said that the body will be received at Heydar Aliyev International Airport with the participation of committee representatives.

It was noted that the State Committee on Work with Diaspora, in coordination with other government bodies, is carrying out all necessary arrangements for the farewell, burial and mourning ceremonies. The farewell and burial ceremony will take place on January 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the Military Memorial Cemetery (Second Alley of Honor), while the mourning ceremony will be held on January 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Tazapir Mosque.

Taghiyev passed away on December 29 in Malmö, Sweden, after a long illness. Originally from Shusha, Shahin Talib oglu Taghiyev was born in Tartar on February 3, 1949. In 1969, he graduated from the Energy Technical School and was assigned to Russia’s Udmurt region.

From a young age, he worked in the energy sector and later in trade in both Russia and Azerbaijan. In 1988, he joined the national liberation movement. In 1991, he volunteered to take part in the Karabakh war, where he led combat operations as a platoon commander with the rank of lieutenant. In 1992, he was appointed commander of the “Qurtuluş” battalion, formed on the basis of his unit, and displayed exceptional bravery during the breakthrough of enemy defenses in the Aghdara direction, as well as in battles fought in the Tartar, Seysulan, Yarimja and Levonarkh directions.

The State Committee on Work with Diaspora has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Shahin Taghiyev and extended its heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives and the diaspora community.

The farewell and funeral ceremony of Azerbaijan’s National Hero Shahin Taghiyev will be held tomorrow at 11:00, the deceased’s family members told APA.

He will be laid to rest at the Military Memorial Cemetery.

It should be noted that his body will be brought to Baku this evening.

Shahin Taghiyev, originally from Shusha, was born on February 3, 1949, in Tartar. He left Azerbaijan in 2001 and moved to Europe. Shahin Taghiyev passed away in Sweden after a prolonged illness while residing in a nursing home.
