125,000 year-old material-cultural samples found in Azerbaijan’s Lerik region

Chief of expedition, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Asadulla Jafarov told APA’s southern bureau that the archaeological excavations in Lerik, as well in the other regions of the republic aim to study formation of ancient people in Azerbaijan.

“The researches conducted in southern region of Azerbaijan revealed that these places had favorable natural and geographical conditions for the settlement of primitive people. Documented camps belonging to the Paleolithic period were not registered during the researches till 1985. It was very pity, because rich material-cultural samples belonging to Eneolithic period, bronze age, ancient and medieval archeology during the prolonged researches. The Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences has issued order to conduct archaeological excavations in these areas since 1985.”

Various material-cultural samples found by expedition shows that the people settled here before 125,000 year. Jafarov said that the expedition will continue research works more time in Lerik region and material-cultural samples will be brought to Baku for examination.
