Baku. Kamala Guliyeva – APA. The ANAS Museum of Azerbaijani History, the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography held a briefing concerning the ancient treasure found in Aghsu region.

APA reports that in her speech, ANAS Vice-President, Director of the Museum of Azerbaijani history Naila Velikhanli said that the Istitue of Archaeology and Ethnography has been carrying out a research in medieval Aghsu city since March 2010. The Aghsu Archeological Expedition led by Gafar Jabiyev researched about 15,000 sq m area and found many rare material and cultural examples on the last medieval history of Azerbaijan: “This discovery was highly assessed by ANAS leadership”.

Director of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography Maisa Rahimova noted that the Azerbaijani has been passing the great development stage in recent years: “The funds have been allocated in recent years from the President’s Reserve Fund for development of archaeology. That’s why the archaeological researches are carried out in all regions of the country. This discovery is a sensation. The treasures will be important for studying Azerbaijan’s history. The research will continue in Aghsu”.

Chief of Aghsu archeological expedition Gafar Jabiyev said that a treasure consisting of gold coins were found during digging work on June 22 in 7th excavation area. One of them was minted in 1781, one – in 1786, three – in 1787, one – in 1796, 31 – in 1800. All coins are in good condition.

Reverse: A Knight facing right standing in armor with a sword in right hand and a bundle of arrows in the left divide the year of issue 17 52. The extensive influence of Provinces of the Netherlands in commerce of the 18th century made these gold coins the International standard of World trade similar to the acceptance of the US$ in the late 20th Century.

Completing necessary research works within two weeks, expedition delivered the treasure to the National Museum of Azerbaijani History on June 25 with recommendation of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography.

Jabiyev said that one more gold sample was found in Aghsu on July 9. It is a gold breast collar. Currently the researches are being continued in Aghsu: “The samples found up to now showed that the cities of Azerbaijan were closely connected with many cities of the world.”
