The explosion took place in a chemical tanker parked outside a scrap depot.
“It was an accidental blast caused by a gas cylinder,†city police chief Javed Alam said in an interview broadcast by several television channels.
Mohammad Ali Baloch said the truck exploded Monday at a depot in Hyderabad city after gas pressure built up in a storage tank. Baloch is the top police official in Hyderabad.
Local TV footage showed hundreds of people crowding the blast site and searching through the rubble of destroyed shops looking for dead and wounded.
According to local television reports, police and Rangers had cordoned off the blast site and an emergency has been declared in the hospitals.
