Lawyers want court to commute sentence of Ideal newspaper founder and editor-in-chief

Baku. Ramil Mammadli – APA. The Court of Grave Crimes held a hearing on the case of Nazim Guliyev, founder and editor-in-chief of the Ideal newspaper, APA reports. Judge Azer Orujov presided over the hearing. The defense said the defendant’s rights had been violated during the initial investigation. The lawyer said the appropriate items of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Procedure Code had also been violated during the preliminary court hearing.

Four lawyers of Guliyev said he was innocent, the initial investigation was not carried out properly. They wanted the court to commute Guliyev’s sentence and pass a special decision on the persons carrying out investigation.

The hearing will continue on January 15.

According to the indictment, Guliyev faced charges under Articles 182.2 (Extortion), 182.2.3 (extortion with use of force), 182.3.2 (extortion with a purpose of occupying large size of property), 221.1 (hooliganism) and 234.1 (Illegal manufacturing, purchase, storage, transportation, transfer or selling of narcotics, psychotropic substances) of the Criminal Code.

On May 20, Nazim Guliyev was acquitted from the charge under Article 147.2 (slander, which is connected with accusation of committing serious or especially serious crime) of the Criminal Code but was given six months in prison on insult charges under Article 148 of the Criminal Code.
The lawsuit had been filed by Tenzila Rustemkhanli, chairwoman of Azeri-Turk Women Association, and Sabira Mahmudova.
