In recent times, there has been an increase in unauthorized access attempts to “WhatsApp” accounts resulting from users clicking on suspicious links sent from unknown or seemingly familiar numbers, Electronic Security Service told APA-Economics.
Cyber fraudsters are using this method to intercept verification (OTP) codes sent to citizens via SMS. When these codes are shared, users’ “WhatsApp” accounts are stolen. Subsequently, fraudulent messages are sent to the victims’ contacts on their behalf, attempting to obtain their financial resources and personal information.
The Electronic Security Service advises citizens to stay alert in such situations and take the following security measures to protect their accounts:
*Do not open links sent from unknown numbers.
*Download applications only from official sources.
*Never share OTP or verification codes with anyone.
*Enable the two-step verification feature in the app’s settings.
*Contact the app’s support service if you encounter suspicious activity.
*Limit your profile information (last seen, profile photo, status, etc.) to be visible only to your contacts.
*Inform your relatives — especially the elderly and those less familiar with technology — about such scams.
