Autumn will begin in Azerbaijan on September 23 at 04:05:08 Baku time, the Department of Astrophysics at the Faculty of Physics of Baku State University told APA.
This moment is known as the “autumnal equinox.”
At this time, day and night are nearly equal in length, and the Sun rises due east and sets due west. However, due to atmospheric refraction and the angular size of the Sun’s disk, daylight does not last exactly 12 hours and is slightly longer than the night.
During its annual apparent motion, the Sun crosses the celestial equator, moving from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern Hemisphere. From that moment, autumn begins in the Northern Hemisphere and spring in the Southern Hemisphere. Afterward, days in the Northern Hemisphere gradually become shorter, while nights become longer.
The change of seasons is not caused by changes in the Earth’s distance from the Sun, but by the Earth’s movement around the Sun and the approximately 66.56° inclination of its rotational axis to the plane of its orbit. As a result of this tilt, the angle at which the Sun’s rays strike the Earth’s surface changes throughout the year, giving rise to the seasons.
In 2026, astronomical autumn will last 89 days, 21 hours, 45 minutes, and 1 second and will end with the winter solstice on December 22.
From that moment, astronomical winter will begin in the Northern Hemisphere, while astronomical summer will begin in the Southern Hemisphere.
