The 3rd International Family Law Conference has been held in Baku with the aim of promoting international cooperation and effective academic and practical dialogue in the field of family law, studying modern and advanced practices, and strengthening the legal protection of the family institution, APA reports.
The conference was jointly organized by Çağ University, the Injuria Law Platform, the Institute of Law and Human Rights, and the International Institute of Family Lawyers.
The event brought together lawyers specializing in family law, judges, attorneys, mediators, representatives of the academic and educational communities, members of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament), representatives of government agencies, and civil society organizations.
Mohammad Guluzade, Chairman of the Board of the Institute of Law and Human Rights, welcomed the participants and highlighted the importance of strengthening legal cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye, studying international experience, and expanding the exchange of expertise.
He noted that meetings held in this format provide an important platform for discussing pressing issues in family law, developing professional dialogue, and identifying areas for future cooperation.
Murat Koç, Rector of Çağ University and professor, said the 3rd International Family Law Conference in Baku, following the first and second conferences held in Mersin and Ankara, serves as an important platform for discussing current family law issues at the international level.
He emphasized that such academic events contribute to further strengthening legal cooperation and interaction between Azerbaijan and Türkiye.
Kamala Mammadova, Director of the Injuria Law Platform, stressed the importance of expanding joint academic and practical activities in light of contemporary challenges in family law and maintaining continuous professional exchanges among legal experts.
Sahra Düzgün Tucel, head of the International Institute of Family Lawyers; Araz Poladov, head of the Legislation Development Sector of the Department of Legislation and Legal Policy of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan; Hijran Huseynova, chair of the Milli Majlis Committee on Family, Women and Children’s Affairs; and MPs Fatma Yıldırım and Bahruz Maharramov addressed contemporary trends in family law, international cooperation, the protection of women’s and children’s rights, and improvements to legislation.
The conference’s panel sessions featured discussions on pressing family law issues, contemporary approaches, and existing legal mechanisms.
The first panel, titled “Cross-border family disputes and international cooperation,” focused on the legal regulation of cross-border family relations, jurisdiction in international family disputes, co-parenting and legal relations involving children, as well as mechanisms for international legal cooperation.
Lawyers Ersan Barkın, Sahra Düzgün Tucel, İrem İleri and Konul Yagubova delivered presentations during the session.
The second panel, “Development trends in modern family law and international conventions,” examined property and inheritance law in family relations, the legal regime governing marital property, the legal and psychological aspects of divorce, as well as challenges in modern family law and judicial practice.
Lawyers Esmira Rzayeva, Ayça Özdoğan, Mehtap Açıkses Akpınar, Khayala Jafarova and Arzu Aliyeva presented reports during the session.
The third panel, “Women’s rights and gender equality in the context of family law,” addressed the protection of women’s rights, gender equality, legal mechanisms for preventing domestic violence and protecting victims, as well as the role of women’s organizations in this area.
The speakers included lawyer Fidan Mammadzada; Aygun Ahmadova, Chair of the Board of the Women’s Development and Awareness Public Union; mediator and lawyer Rahila Aghaguliyeva; and lawyer Feyza Altun.
The fourth panel, “Mediation and alternative mechanisms in resolving family disputes,” examined legal and out-of-court settlement of family disputes, the potential of mediation and arbitration, practical legal approaches, and the socio-psychological aspects of divorce proceedings.
Presentations were delivered by lawyers Mahura Karimova and Zinyat Aghamaliyeva, as well as psychologist Ceren Pakman.
A total of 87 participants from four countries attended the conference.
