The Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Samir Mammadov, participated in the event titled "Tripling Nuclear Energy by 2050" during the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) held in Baku, APA reports.
Samir Mammadov stated in his speech that discussions on climate change would contribute to deepening global cooperation.
The Deputy Minister emphasized that Azerbaijan is determined to become one of the leading countries in the field of renewable energy. He also shared with the participants the country’s plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2050 and to increase the share of renewable energy in electricity generation to 30% by 2030.
At the event, it was noted that Azerbaijan is interested in nuclear energy, especially in innovative nuclear technologies such as small modular reactors (SMR), in this aspect, expressing its commitment to clean energy transition by understanding the responsibility of its obligations under the Paris Agreement. It was emphasized that the Azerbaijani government supports the joint analysis of the potential role of nuclear energy, including SMRs, in the transition to clean energy within the framework of the "Atoms4Netzero" initiative.
