A seminar on “Digital Connectivity for Central Asia and the Caucasus” was held in Baku within the framework of the World Telecommunication Development Conference, organized by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport told APA-Economics.
According to the information, speaking at the opening ceremony, Samir Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport, stated that the topic of the event is of strategic importance for the development and future welfare of the region. It was noted that the Trans-Caspian fiber-optic cable project, which is currently under construction, will create a high-speed and secure alternative route connecting Europe and Asia, turning Azerbaijan into a regional digital hub.
S. Mammadov stated that the establishment of a resilient broadband internet infrastructure, as well as the approval of the “Artificial Intelligence Strategy for 2025–2028” and the creation of the National Artificial Intelligence Center, are among the key initiatives that will strengthen digital transformation in Azerbaijan.
As part of the event, an exchange ceremony was held for the “Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan in the fields of ICT and postal services,” signed by the ministers of both countries.
Later, a bilateral meeting was held between Samir Mammadov, Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Noriko Horiuchi, Minister of State at Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
During the meeting, the parties exchanged views on cooperation opportunities in priority areas such as new technologies—particularly artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things. They also agreed on establishing a working group and preparing an action plan for the implementation of the Memorandum.
