Azercosmos has started to cooperate with the developing small island states and other vulnerable member states of the Commonwealth of Nations in the direction of strengthening climate-related activities. Cooperation is carried out within the framework of the memorandum signed jointly by Azerbaijan and the Commonwealth of Nations, APA reports.
Azercosmos has developed a comprehensive program for the member states of the organization to conduct analyzes and evaluate the activities of climate change through space technology and geographic data. Within the framework of the program, in the member states of the union, especially in the Caribbean region and the territories of the Pacific countries:
- drought level monitoring and drought risk assessment using satellite images;
- classification of cultivated areas;
- complex monitoring of forests;
- space monitoring activities of methane (CH4) concentration will be carried out.
This program which was developed by Azercosmos will contribute to the development of human capital in space and to share Azerbaijan's space experience in countries that are sensitive to climate change and have little or no access to space.
By harnessing the power of space technology and geographic data, this partnership aims to strengthen climate resilience, improve disaster preparedness and support sustainable development. This program, which includes space solutions, will serve as a kind of road map for the countries included in the Commonwealth of Nations, both at the COP29 event to be held in Baku, and in the future activities on climate change.
