Christopher Strasser's initiative on this issue also failed in 2013”, said the Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev while answering the question of Irish MP Michael McNamara on political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
The head of state expressed his regret that Azerbaijan has become a victim of intentional provocations: “We exactly know that this was not caused by human rights, democracy, especially geopolitical issues. What you read in the newspapers has been written by powers which are interested in attacking in Azerbaijan. I say once again, there are no political prisoners in Azerbaijan. Mr. Strasser's report had failed in this hall at that time. Because the report was made on the basis of slander and false information, you want to do the same now. You want to change position of the PACE, but I repeat again, we have no political prisoners. Moreover, Azerbaijan has joined the European Convention for Human Rights, is a member of the European Court on Human Rights and it’s possible to raise such a question in this court. We respect the decisions of this court. I reiterate attacks against Azerbaijan will produce no results”.
