A court in Yerevan has extended the arrest of the leader of the opposition Mother Armenia party, Andranik Tevanyan, for two months, Izvestia reports.
This was announced by his lawyer Aram Orbelian on July 22.
"The court granted the request of the investigation and extended the period of arrest for another two months. The only thing that the court specifically noted was my client's right to receive medical care. The court ordered the investigator and all competent authorities to provide him with the opportunity to receive treatment from his doctor in a civilian medical facility," Tevanyan's lawyer said in a video posted on the party's Facebook page (owned by Meta, recognized as an extremist organization in the Russian Federation).
The defense lawyer also noted that, in his opinion, the prosecution has not yet provided legally substantiated evidence in the case. He recalled that even at the first court hearing, the defense pointed out the lack of sufficient justification for the charges.
In addition, the lawyer reported on the deterioration of Tevanyan's health. According to him, the defense has information that an ambulance was called to the accused. At the same time, the defense has not yet received responses to previously sent appeals.
Tevanyan was arrested in Yerevan on May 24. The party said that the politician is accused of "absurd, far-fetched and unfounded" crimes. The oppositionist's lawyer also stated that there are no grounds for initiating a criminal case.
Sputnik Armenia reported on July 9 that the court had arrested Tevanyan's associate Areknaz Manukyan. Manukyan is accused of disclosing information containing state secrets. The court chose a preventive measure in the form of arrest for a period of two months.
