European Council President: â€œStability can not be achieved in the South Caucasus, unless the Nagorno Karabakh problem is solved fairlyâ€

The European Union supports the efforts of Minsk Group mediators,” President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said at the joint press conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, APA’s Europe correspondent reports from Brussels. He welcomed the statement of the heads of co-chairing countries regarding the resolution of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

Herman Van Rompuy called Azerbaijan an important partner for the EU. “We have achieved much in cooperation, including the energy sphere and can achieve more,” he said.

President of the European Council said they discussed prospects of cooperation, energy issue, improvement in the sphere of democracy and human rights in Azerbaijan and upcoming presidential elections. Herman Van Rompuy expressed his hope that the elections will be in line with the highest standards. He also hopes that the negotiations on the association agreement with Azerbaijan will be completed.
