So if we look at the situation in Azerbaijan, an independent and sovereign country, and the situation in which Azerbaijan was once, we can honestly see a great progress in the country,” said President of European Commission José Manuel Barroso while responding to the question of APA’s correspondent in Brussels about the situation of human rights and democracy in Azerbaijan.
He noted that each country has its own peculiarities: “Speaking about democracy in the any country, we should take into account its peculiarities arising from its history, geography and problems. This does not mean that Azerbaijan meets all standards today. I strongly believe that transparent and democratic reforms are necessary in order to achieve progress and I am fully confident that President Ilham Aliyev is committed to the modernization of his country and pays attention to the image and influence of Azerbaijan.”
He stated that the human rights are the key points of the EU cooperation with partner countries: “Europe is not perfect either and we need to be vigilant when it comes to the protection of all rights in the EU countries and partner states.”
