APA reports that head of the working group established in this regard, vice-speaker Valeh Alasgarov read the statement.

The statement says that Azerbaijan is one of the co-founders of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly and going to sign an association agreement with the European Union: “The discussion and adoption of the issue regarding Azerbaijan at the plenary meeting of the European Parliament on June 13 is not understandable. Hasty adoption of such a resolution by the European Parliament without any clarification causes regret. The prison term of several persons has been extended as new cases emerged. The demand to release the imprisoned persons immediately and unconditionally is unacceptable.”

It is said that presidential election campaign has not officially started in Azerbaijan, the candidates have not been registered.

“Azerbaijani people have chosen the way of democratic development. The protection of human rights and freedoms in Azerbaijan has productive mechanism. It is biased that Azerbaijan is discussed at the European Parliament as a state violating human rights. It is an attempt to change the direction of the EU policy on Azerbaijan. It coincides with the decision on the new gas corridor and President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Brussels and is related with the economic interests. Azerbaijan is an independent state and its relations with the EU are developing basing on legal equality. No force can distract Azerbaijan from the way of democratic development.”

The statement was put to the vote and adopted.
