# 17 June 2013 09:30 (UTC +04:00)

APA reports that the conference was organized by the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SAM) and Germany's Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS).

Delivering a keynote speech SAM director Farhad Mammadov said that the legal status of the Caspian Sea has not been determined yet, but the Caspian littoral states can cooperate basing on bilateral agreements. Mammadov noted that Azerbaijan always supports co-operation and each of the Caspian littoral states has its own interests and everyone can understand each other better and thus disagreements can be resolved by listening to the experts participating in the conference.

The KAS Regional Program Director Canan Atilgan expressed her hope that the conference will contribute to the determination of further steps regarding cooperation in the Caspian region. She informed the participants about the activities of the Foundation in the South Caucasus. Atilgan noted that the European Union should play a more active role in the resolution of conflicts in the South Caucasus, development of the region and supporting economic diversification.

The conference continued its work on panels “The dynamics of cooperation in the Caspian Region: trade and transportation routes”, “The Caspian region's security strategy: national perspectives, regional cooperation and role of foreign players”.
