Defense Ministry: Preparations are going for withdrawal of Azerbaijani peacekeepers from Iraq

Baku. Ramil Mammadli –APA. Azerbaijani contingent served in the Coalition of Multinational Forces in Iraq is going to return home, press officer of the Defense Ministry Eldar Safarov told APA. He said preparations for the withdrawal would be completed in the next few days. “We will make public announcement on completion of preparation work”.
President of Azerbaijan requested Milli Majlis, Azerbaijani parliament on November 7, 2008 to review draft law on withdrawal of Azerbaijani contingent served in coalition of international forces in Iraq. The parliament passed decision on withdrawal of troops on November 14.
Azerbaijani contingent has served in Iraq since August 15, 2003 in the coalition of international forces in Iraq. Azerbaijani peacekeepers, under the US command, are protecting dams near the city of Al-Hadita and power station supplying 30 per cent of electricity of Iraq. Azerbaijani troops lost one serviceman during 6-year service in Iraq. 14 officers, 16 ensigns and 120 soldiers are serving within the Azerbaijani contingent and they are rotated every six months.
