French National Assembly also collects signatures to abolish law criminalizing denial of so-called “Armenian genocide”

Baku – APA. Along with the Senate, lower chamber of the French parliament – National Assembly also collected the signatures to abolish the law that criminalizes denial of so-called “Armenian genocide”. 72 or 77 signatures were collected in the Senate on the initiative of Senator Jacques Mezard to appeal the Constitutional Court for abolition of the law. In the National Assembly, lawmaker from the Sarkozy’s Union for a Popular Movement Michel Diefenbacher collected 65 signatures for above-mentioned appeal. It is needed to have 60 signatures to appeal the Constitutional Council.

Turkey welcomes this step of the French Senators and lawmakers. President Abdullah Gul said “I surmised that the French people wouldn’t allow overshadow their country and I told it. Now we see that the process is developing in that direction we predicted”, Gul said and added that he believes the Constitutional Council will pass a right decision.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said “that is what France should do”. “I hope the Constitutional Council will pass a decision in accordance with the France’s values”.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu also emphasized that the French Senators and lawmakers respect their values. “We will patiently wait for the Constitutional Council’s decision. We wish the Turkish-French friendship to win”.

The Constitutional Council of France will issue its opinion in the course of a month.
