On July 15, 2016, a treacherous network that had infiltrated the most sensitive institutions of the Turkish state attempted to overthrow the constitutional order and plunge the country into chaos, Turkish Ambassador to Azerbaijan Birol Akgun said at an event marking July 15 – Democracy and National Unity Day, APA reports.

The ambassador said that FETÖ is a dangerous terrorist organization that operates not only through propaganda, but also through secret plans, deception and espionage.

“It should not be forgotten that this structure's only target is not Türkiye,” the diplomat emphasized.

Birol Akgun noted that July 15 was the glorious victory of democracy, the national will and a nation devoted to its independence under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The ambassador also expressed gratitude for Azerbaijan's support in the face of the attempted coup on July 15, 2016.

Birol Akgun said they are grateful to the brotherly people and state of Azerbaijan, who condemned the coup attempt in the strongest terms from the very first moment and stood by Türkiye.

“We express our gratitude to all Azerbaijani officials who demonstrated their position on that dark night and later reinforced the slogan 'One nation, two states' by ensuring the highest level of cooperation between our institutions,” he said.
