Baku. Ramil Mammadli – APA. Azerbaijani political analysts consider that the statements calling to include the Turkmenchay treaty in the agenda of the Iran Islamic Consultative Assembly are groundless.

Political analyst Vafa Guluzadeh told APA that the statements, which call to include the Turkmenchay treaty in the agenda of the Iran Islamic Consultative Assembly and to draft a bill regarding it, are blackmail.
“We must not yield to their blackmail. Iran can not do anything. Iran must deal with its problems. The problem regarding Iran will be solved soon. The West will attack Iran, as this country is producing nuclear weapons. Iran would better think about it, not about territorial claims against Azerbaijan,” he said.
Vafa Guluzadeh underlined that basing on the norms of the international law, the Turkmenchay treaty can not be cancelled.

Former chairman of the Azerbaijani parliament’s commission on state building, former parliamentarian Gulamhuseyn Alibeyli said the Gulustan and Turkmenchay treaties were signed to officialize the fact of occupation of Azerbaijan.
“When these treaties were signed, Azerbaijan was not a part of Iran. Azerbaijan was a country consisting of khanates and had no centralized state structure. These two treaties aimed to divide Azerbaijan between Iran and Russia. Simply, the territories of another state were divided between the two states,” he said.

Alibeyli noted that in this regard, reconsideration of the treaties by Iran has no legal consequences for Azerbaijan. “The ideas sounded in the Iranian parliament are groundless from the point of view of international law too. Azerbaijan is a state that is an independent entity of the international law and was recognized by the United Nations. The territorial claims against our country must be assessed as an aggression”.

During the press conference held by the chairman of the Iranian parliament’s foreign policy and security commission Alaaddin Burujerdi, member of the parliament from Urmia Nadir Gazipoor said that if Azerbaijan doesn’t correct its Iran policy, Iranian lawmakers will demand reconsideration of the Turkmenchay treaty at the parliament. “If Azerbaijani officials give asylum to hypocrites, Azerbaijani deputies elected from Ardabil, Tabriz and Urmia will submit the draft law they prepared on this issue, to the parliament and demand reconsideration of Turkmenchay treaty. If the laws are reconsidered, the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan belongs to Iran”.

Russian Empire and Gadjar’s Iran state singed Gulustan treaty on October 12, 1813 and Turkmenchay treaty on February 10, 1828. According to both treaties, the historical territories of Azerbaijan were divided between these countries demarcated by Araz River.
