Today Azerbaijan attends UN Security Council’s first meeting in 2012

Baku. Habil Suleymanzadeh – APA. The UN Security Council will hold its first meeting in 2012 on Wednesday. According to APA, Azerbaijan and four other non-permanent members – Morocco, Guatemala, Pakistan and Togo took up their duties on January 1, 2012.

Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to UN Agshin Mehdiyev told Russian ITAR-TASS agency that Azerbaijan is planning to participate actively in the decision-making process and the activity of the working committees and group of the UN Security Council. Touching upon the settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict, Ambassador Mehdiyev said Baku insisted and would insist in fulfillment of the UN resolutions regarding this issue. He said he hoped that Azerbaijan’s international influence and non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council would have positive role in the settlement of the conflict.

Concerning the Syrian problem, which was put on UN Security Council’s agenda, Azerbaijani Permanent Representative said that both sides should avoid the actions that deepen confrontation. “The solution of Syrian problem doesn’t need in foreign interference. They must avoid the actions that deepen confrontation and give a chance to the people to solve the issue themselves”.

Speaking about the Palestinian problem, Mehdiyev reminded that Azerbaijan recognized the State of Palestine and Palestinian embassy has been opened in Baku.
