Azerbaijani Foreign Minister meets with his Italian counterpart in Rome

The ministers expressed their satisfaction with the level of the bilateral political relations. As the main indictor of the development of political relations they noted the high-level meetings, especially at the invitation of Italian President Giorgio Napolitano Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s participation in the official events on the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification on June 2.

As regards the economic relations, Franco Frattini said he believes his country will continue to be Azerbaijan’s first trade partner in future, underlined the importance of enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries not only in the oil sector, but also in the non-oil sector. The sides exchanged views on a number of projects to be implemented within the framework of the cooperation in culture and education.

Issues of regional security were discussed during the meeting. Elmar Mammadyarov gave information about Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict and the process of negotiations. He said the resolution of Nagorno Karabakh conflict is important for the establishment of peace and stability in the region and prosperity of the region.

Franco Frattini agreed with his Azerbaijani counterpart and said his country supports the current process of negotiations.

Issues of energy security were also discussed during the meeting. Elmar Mammadyarov briefed on the current and prospective energy projects in the region. Franco Frattini underlined Azerbaijan’s increasing role in Europe’s energy security.

The sides exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest, particularly regional and European security, fight against international terrorism.

The ministers noted that the dynamics of the development of Azerbaijan-Italy relations allows to enter the stage of strategic cooperation.
